The Varia Suit is an upgrade to the Power Suit and is seen many times throughout the Metroid series. It is characterized by large shoulder armour pads, along with other slight variations to the Power Suit, as well as providing certain benefits depending on the game in question. It is the most well known look of Samus and is iconic among gamers.
In Metroid, the suit made for a colour change from the usual orange/red/yellow style to pure white. It would reduce incoming damage by 50% in total.
 Metroid II: Return of Samus
In Metroid II: Return of Samus, the suit color change was no longer possible due to having no colours to play around with, only shades. Having said this, on top of the 50% damage reduction system it also now carries an increase in movement speed.
 Super Metroid
In Super Metroid, the Varia Suit takes on the colour scheme most people know as to be the staple look of the suit. It continues to provide a 50% damage reduction, as well as an added bonus of taking no damage from high-temperature areas.
 Metroid Fusion
In Metroid Fusion, the suit is only obtainable by beating a Core-X parasite. The damage reduction provided by the suit has now changed from 50% to a lower total of 40%, along with continuing to provide protection from high-temperatures and now also extends that protection to low temperatures. On top of this, another benefit is added in the ability to absorb blue x parasites.
 Metroid: Zero Mission
In Metroid: Zero Mission, only the colour of the Power Suit is changed at first, until later when it is destroyed. This time, damage reduction has been lessened to an even greater extent, only providing a mere 20% reduction in damage. It continues to stop high-temperature damage, along with two new additions being protection from bomb parasites and acid.
 Metroid Prime
In Metroid Prime, the mere 20% damage reduction is now a nearly non-existent case of 10%. Again, it continues to protect from high-temperatures though there is no new benefits added this time round.
Metroid Prime: Hunters / Metroid Prime 2: Echoes / Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
 Metroid: Other M
So far, all that is known is that it seems Samus starts with the Varia Suit like in the three previous games. Having said this, it's closer in design to the Power Suit, in relevance to this newest addition to the series being a combination of both old and new Metroid.
