Metroid Dread is an unconfirmed Metroid title rumored to be in production for the Nintendo DS. However, since 2005, no details have been provided nor any announcement.
Metroid Dread is supposed to return to the roots and provide a 2D or flat side view story, following that of Metroid Fusion, for Samus Aran on the latest Nintendo portable.
Several publications, such as Nintendo Power and the Official Nintendo Magazine (UK), reported Metroid Dread with a late 2006 release date, yet at both E3 2005 and 2006, no such announcement was provided by Nintendo. More of the same continued into E3 2007, but gamers were given, what we believe to be, a hint at the production of the title. In Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, within the Metroid Processing area, the Scan Visor finds a piece of Lore with: "Experiment status report update: Metroid project 'Dread' is nearing the final stages of completion." This piece of news reinvogorated the wait for Metroid Dread, but Nintendo denied the creation of a 2D game on September 6, 2007. Therefore, Retro Studios could have just included the "tip" as a bit of a joke for themselves.
However, the game might still be in production because the Japanese version of Corruption had a bit of a text change for the lore. According to GoNintendo , the Japanese text now reads: "Space Pirates data decrypted: Ordnance research and development progress report. The development of Dread-Class Turret is going well."
