Samus Aran is the legendary bounty hunter who is well-known for defeating the Space Pirates and wiping out the dangerous Metroids. Though she was at first rumored to be a male cyborg, Samus revealed her true identity after she defeated the Space Pirates on Zebes. Her reputation grew as her reliability almost always guaranteed success in her hired jobs.

Samus was the daughter of two colonists on the Federation colony world K-2L. When she was quite young, the species known only as the Space Pirates destroyed the colony, leaving Samus as the sole survivor. A group of Chozo picked up the distress signal from the colony, and took Samus with them to their home on planet Zebes. They raised her as their own, infusing her with their blood for her to gain their natural powers.

Young Samus & Chozo Elder

In Metroid: Zero Mission, Samus has flashbacks to her childhood with the Chozo when she sees a mural depicting a Chozo warrior, and also as a sequence of pictures in a connectivity bonus between Metroid Fusion and Metroid: Zero Mission.

How and why Samus eventually left Zebes is a bit of a mystery. According to the Metroid Prime instruction manual, the Space Pirates attacked Zebes and wiped out most of the local Chozo after discovering the Metroids. However, it goes on to say Samus was growing up at the time; this clashes with the plot of Metroid: Zero Mission, which says that Samus grew up on the very same planet.

Samus is rarely seen without her Chozo-designed Power Suit. In addition to providing protection, the suit augments her physical abilities, allowing her to leap great distances or scale vertical cliffs. The suit is also modular, able to equip many different upgrades to increase versatility.

The suit mutated in response to Samus' biological integration of Metroid DNA in Metroid Fusion. The suit lost its metallic appearance and assumed a more organic appearance and even appears to breath. The DNA caused a side effect making it vulnerable to cold like a common Metroid and also unable to use the Ice Beam. By integrating the SA-X Parasite, Samus regained her natural red and yellow color scheme and the ability to use her Ice Beam. Samus' fate is currently unknown. Having destroyed a Federation Satelite without permission, she may be wanted for questioning. Though her actions were not authorized, they saved the galaxy from the X-Parasite which the Federation foolishly sought to control.

Dark Samus

Appearing first in Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, Dark Samus is the evil counterpart of Samus Aran. Dark Samus is thought to be Samus's corrupted suit being inhabited by Metroid Prime, from the first Prime game. She has many of the same abilities as Samus, but better--she shoots Missiles faster, her Power Beam has a shotgun effect, she can hover, she has a powerful Phazon dash attack, a Phazon shield, and an incredibly powerful Boost Ball attack. She can also render herself invisible in the normal spectrum to where she can only be seen using the Dark Visor or Echo Visor. This creature is utterly dependent on finding a plentiful supply of Phazon for sustenance; nothing will stop her in this errand. She can also reassemble her body short of complete atomic disruption. Samus defeated this creature three times on Aether, (in four forms, in the last battle she transforms sporadically during the fight, raising a nearly impenetrable force field only penetrated by phazon energy) succeeding the last time only by using Dark Samus's mighty Phazon Beam against it. However, Dark Samus was later spotted escaping Aether in her broken form. Dark Samus has no allegiances but to herself, seen frequently killing Space Pirates in her never ending quest for Phazon. According to log entries, the Space Pirates tried and failed in reasoning with her. Whether "she" can communicate in some non-primal way is unknown.

If you defeat the game with 100%, the secret cutscene after the credits will reveal blue sparkles in space around Aether. These sparkles will reform into Dark Samus, who remains floating in space before the scene fades to black. Dark Samus' fate is currently unknown. The eye seen on the Phazon suit hand in the 100% ending of Metroid Prime 1 was visible on Dark Samus in the 100% ending of Metroid Prime 2.

Though we do not know what Dark Samus plans, she will make her presence known in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. The Phazon parasite will most likely come seeking the Phazon of the corrupted planets that Samus seeks to purify.

Metroids

Metroids are gelatanous creatures native to SR-388. They are considered the most deadly creatures in the galaxy and are capable of annihilating several people.

Metroids come in several forms. The average Metroid goes through Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and Omega stages. The most common image of a Metroid is that of an Alpha Metroid. As it grows, it becomes more dinosaur like and becomes ferocious and heavily armored. Some Metroids mature to the point of a Queen Metroid.

Metroids are able to use their mighty fangs to latch on to virtually any creature and drain the energy out of it. It takes an explosion to detach them as they have great force and without cold based weaponry, requires heavy firepower to kill. In all forms, Metroids are vulnerable only to cold. As they grow, the weakpoint of a Metroid becomes more and more difficult to access.

In Metroid II, Samus Aran erradicated the Metroid species with the exception of one hatchling. In Super Metroid, this hatchline grew to immense proportions (still in the Alpha form) and died trying to protect Samus (who was viewed as the Metroid's mother by the creature) from Mother Brain. In Metroid Fusion, a cure was developed for the X-Parasite using the final Metroid's cells. It was also discovered that the Federation had secretely cloned Metroids for their own uses though they were destroyed when discovered by Samus Aran.

Prior to the eradication of Metroids, Space Pirates exposed them to Phazon in Metroid Prime 1 and 2. This resulted in the Hunter and Fission Metroids. The Hunter Metroid was a mutated form of the Alph Metroid with tentacles as opposed to fangs and was capable of latching on from distances and draining energy, they are also much more versatile. Fission Metroids are essentially Alpha Metroids that split into two Metroids when attacked. Each of these Metroids is vulnerable to a specific weapon (as opposed to always cold). In Metroid Prime 2, the Ing attached to Metroids forming a Dark Metroid which is essentially a more powerful Metroid vulnerable to light.

Metroid Prime, though given the name of Metroid, is not actually a true Metroid. Though it does have the mysterious ability to spawn Alpha, Hunter, and Fission Metroids it does not suck out energy but rather Phazon. The creature does resemble a Metroid in its pure form but can also integrate technology of any kind and produce pure liquid Phazon. It has the ability to phase through the visible spectrum and is considered one source of the corrupting Phazon radiation.
